XENIAN:
Information | Name Origin

click for larger version Xenian is the flower villain from the Sailor Moon R movie. She is quite an evil plant, and she draws on the life energy of all living things. She can't do anything on her own, however, as she has no legs, so she must depend on a weaker organism to do her work. She fills the weaker person's heart and soul with evil. Fiore found Xenian, and she possessed him, giving him power and strength to travel to earth and steal its energy. She gave Fiore the strength to battle Sailor Moon. When he captured the Sailor Senshi, the strength of Sailor Moon's feelings for her friends began to soften the evil in his heart. He released them, but Xenian appeared once again and put him into a trance, telling him that he had to defeat Sailor Moon in order to make Mamoru remember his friendship. The power of Xenian made him strong enough to steal Sailor Moon's energy. Just as he was about to finish her off, a red rose struck him - Mamoru had attacked. Fiore was shocked that Mamoru would attack him. He caused all of the flowers on the asteroid (which was Xenian's base) to disappear, and changed the direction of the asteroid. It was now headed toward Earth, and it was Fiore's intention to allow them all to burn in the Earth's atmosphere. Xenian then stated that although they would all be dead, her seeds would cover the Earth in her flowers and drain it of its energy. Usagi then used the power of the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou to destroy Xenian and change the course of the asteroid, preventing its collision with the Earth. Xenian only appeared in the Sailor Moon R movie, and never in the manga. Her seiyuu is Yumi Touma.

Xenian is often mistakenly called the "Kisenian." "Kisenian" is the actual Romanization of , but the word is a Japanese approximation of "Xenian." It is therefore more appropriate to call the flower "Xenian." On the Japanese LD cover, the Romanized name appears as "Xenian." Sometimes she is referred to as "Xenian Flower," but this is not necessary because "Flower" is never included after her name in the Sailor Moon R Movie credits.

NAME ORIGIN

In botany, the term "xenia" refers to the effect produced in a hybrid plant by the transfer of pollen from the endosperm of one plant to another plant with a different kind of endosperm. The name fits, but this botanical term is probably not the actual origin of Xenian's name. A more likely candidate is the ancient Greek term "xenia," referring to hospitality. In ancient Greece, hosts and guests were expected to treat each other with kindness and respect... this was xenia. A guest may travel a long distance to stay with his host. Upon parting, the host was expected to give his guest a parting gift, to show that he has enjoyed his friend's stay. Later, the host may travel to visit his former guest, and the same rules would apply. This concent is strongly reminiscent of the story in the Sailor Moon R movie. Fiore travels from a faraway galaxy, and Mamoru gives him a flower. Fiore promises to return one day with a flower for Mamoru - and he does: he brings Xenian.
