click for larger version The Makaiju is the tree for which the aliens An and Al (sometimes called Ail or Eiru) must collect energy. It is their "tree of life," and it makes its first appearance in episode 47, in Sailor Moon R. It only appeared in the anime, because An and Al were created only so that the manga could catch up with the anime. The two aliens are searching for energy to give their tree life, so they steal energy from humans. Eventually, the energy that they stole no longer worked for the tree. The tree seemed to like Sailor Moon's energy, so An and Al tried to give it to Usagi as an offering. By this point, however, the tree had fed on too much negative energy, causing it to react violently and injure those around it. The Makaiju attacks Al, but An runs in front of the attack to protect him. Unfortunately, An is killed by the attack. Al was so distraught that he finally realized love - and the tree stopped attacking. At this time, the tree began to tell its story to Sailor Moon. The tree is actually the mother of the two aliens, and at one time had many other children that gave it energy. Eventually, the children became greedy and jealous of each other, and began fighting for power. They all destroyed each other, except for An and Al, who were small children. The tree went to sleep and fled into space with the two small children. It was awakened when it came into contact with Sailor Moon. It then revealed that it needed the energy of love to survive, not negative energy. Sailor Moon purifies the Makaiju, and it disappears. Sailor Moon gives its energy to An to revive her. When the two aliens are reunited, a tiny sapling appears to them. The tree had been reborn, and they were given the chance to start over. The two aliens take the sapling into space to help it grow again at the end of episode 59. The Makaiiju is sometimes called the "Hell Tree." Its seiyuu is Taeko Nakanishi.
