PHOBOS & DEIMOS:

Anime

Phobos and Deimos are Rei's two pet crows who live with her at Hikawa Jinja. In the manga, they have the ability to transform into humans, but in the anime, they remain as crows throughout the entire series. There is no way of distinguishing which crow is Phobos and which is Deimos, as they look exactly alike. They make their first appearance in episode 010, and are named in the same episode. They do not serve a very large role in the anime, but they do have the ability to sense evil energy (like Rei), and will attack those whom they believe to be evil. In episode 030, they even attack Zoisite after he tried to extract a Nijizuishou from Rei's grandfather.

Manga

Phobos and Deimos are Rei's two crow guardians. In the anime, they appear only as crows, though they are often quite useful to Rei, feeling negative energy and guiding Rei but never speaking. In the manga, however, they play a much greater role. They first appear as crows in Act 03, Volume 01, attacking Usagi because she is emitting a strange aura, and they think that she is an enemy (Rei later explains that they usually do not attack humans). Later in the same act, they appear when Rei first transforms into Sailor Mars, and fly about when she uses her Akuryou Taisan attack. They do not appear again until Act 34, Volume 12, when they drop a copy of a newspaper article and a tarot card in front of Rei. The article is about the day's total solar eclipse, and the tarot card indicates that bad things are to come. Ths helps Rei figure out that a new enemy is on its way. In Act 36, Volume12, Phobos and Deimos appear for the first time in their sprite (humanoid) form. When PallaPalla traps Rei inside the Mirror House at the Dead Moon Circus, Luna notices that the two crows caw loudly outside the building. Suddently, they burst through the glass of the Mirror House and attack Tiger's Eye (who is in the form of a tiger, and about to devour the unconscious Rei) with a whirlwind of their black feathers. They awaken Rei and surprise her with their sprite forms. They introduce themselves to her, give her her Mars Crystal (allowing her to transform into Super Sailor Mars), and destroy Tiger's Eye and the Mirror House. Also in this act, we learn how Rei first met Phobos and Deimos. When Rei first went to live at the Hikawa Jinja Shrine with her grandfather, she saw two crows out in the garden. She imediately ran after them and befriended them, much to Rei's grandfather's surprise. Their final appearance is in Act 45, Volume 16. Lead Crow attacks the Hikawa Jinja Shrine, and Phobos and Deimos appear in their humanoid forms. They are surprised to see her there, as she is from their home planet of Coronis, where they were senshi in training. Lead Crow tells them how she stole the Sailor Crystal of Sailor Coronis for Galaxia, much to their dismay. Lead Crow promptly kills them and takes their Sailor Crystals. Phobos is the girl in the lighter (red) outfit, and Deimos is the one in the darker (purple) outfit. The two are named after the two moons of Mars.
