The Maenads play an extremely small role in Sailor Moon, but are often discussed and often
misunderstood. The are the two priestesses of Elysion who appear only in the manga. They are
first seen in Act 40, Volume 14. Usagi and Mamoru travel to Elysion with Helios, and find the
two women sleeping in a large crystal. Helios explains that they are the only two inhabitants
of the land, maidens who guard the shrine, and that they are sleeping, protected from the curse
that lies over Elysion. The next time we see this is in Act 41, Volume 15, and they are no
longer slumbering. They have been waiting to guide ChibiUsa to Helios so that she could help
him. The Maenads have no names of their own, and they do not appear in the anime.
