Happy Barry Sailor Moon (
)
is a flower that was named after Sailor Moon. It is a hybrid flower that was named after Sailor Moon because the scientist
Shigeru Makoto Kono thought that the flower's yellow color matched that of Usagi's hair. Images of the orchid appear in
on the inside cover of original manga volume #18, as well as on three pages of Artbook V. In the notes of Artbook V, Naoko
Takeuchi wrote, "The day the final Sailor Moon anime was released, I received this flower from Tomari-sama, the Toei
director of animation, and I was so happy that I tried putting them on the cover as well."
The words "Happy Barry Sailor Moon" appear on the inside cover of original manga volume #18 in Roman characters. However, it has recently been suggested that a better translation of the name would be "Happy Valley Sailor Moon." The characters used for the word "Barry" are often translated to "Valley."
Happy Barry Sailor Moon is a breed of orchid called a Cymbidium ('Cym' for short). The breed was registered on October 9, 1997. Cymbidiums grow throughout Asia, and were some of the first flowers to be hybridized. As a result, there are dozens of different types, all of which have been aggressively bred. Happy Barry Sailor Moon orchids are not cultivated every year, and are only grown in a certain part of Japan.
