Haruka and Michiru: Fact and Fiction

This is just my small personal compilation of some of the dumb rumours that are going around about Haruka & Michiru. These rumours are basically silly attempts to either justify or deny Haruka and Michiru's lesbianism. The bold print is the rumour (it is COMPLETELY UNTRUE) and the normal type is the truth.

I'm alway open for contributions of new rumours about the two to post here, so if you know of anything ridiculous you've heard, or if you'd just like to elaborate or correct me on some of my explanations, feel free to email me!


Haruka & Michiru are lesbians because Prince Uranus from the past was in love with Princess Neptune. After they died and were reborn on Earth, they were both reincarnated as girls, but fell in love again
There was no Prince Uranus. That simple. They were girls to begin with and they were girls in the end. This is Sailor Uranus we're talking about, not Sailor Star Fighter. ;) This whole rumour as well as the counterpart below were made up by the homophobic weirdos at SOS who couldn't handle the truth and needed some elaborate lie to lean on. Well, they ended up sucking a lot of people into their little web of lies, and because their website was popular for a while, most people believed it - namely the ones who had never seen the Japanese original. Now almost everyone hates SOS for the MANY MANY things they've made up and tried to pass off as the truth. SOS has even admitted that there was no evidence of this.

Haruka & Michiru are lesbians because Prince Uranus from the past was in love with Princess Neptune. He died in battle, and his twin sister Princess Uranus took his place when they were reincarnated, but still had his strong feelings of love for Neptune
Same as above, it didn't happen, it was all made up. Neptune and Uranus were reincarnated just the same as everyone else, and both were princesses. I mean, think about it. When they transform into their princess forms in the manga, the forms they were in in the Silver Millenium, they are all female. So if Princess Uranus had been PRINCE Uranus, then Haruka would have transformed into Prince Uranus, don't you think? Well, anyway, Prince Uranus never existed.

Evidence against the first 2 rumours: In manga volume 9, act 30, pages 77 - 82, Haruka is shown alive and female after the Moon Kingdom's fall - obviously she did not die as a male after the fall of the Moon Kingdom.

Haruka and Michiru are not lesbians.

Haruka and Michiru are not lesbians, they are just friends. In Japan, girls are encouraged to have a very close friend like that that sticks with them throughout live. They are just EXTREMELY close best friends.
This was another SOS invention. They are lesbians, and the whole Japanese cultural element is made up - little Japanese girls have best friends just like little American girls, but they don't have lesbian relationships with them like Haruka and Michiru have. They're lesbians lesbians lesbians!!

Haruka is a lesbian and likes Michiru, but Michiru has to constantly push her away.
Haruka and Michiru share a mutual love, there is no pushing away of anyone. Where do people get these ideas? I think this one can be based in the fact that Michiru is a more popular character than Haruka.

Michiru is not a lesbian. Haruka tricked Michiru into thinking that she was male, like she tricked Usagi and Minako, and tried to make her fall in love with her. It all sounds so very Jerry Springer to me. Haruka did not trick Michiru, and Michiru is a lesbian. I can see where you may pick this up from the fact that Usagi and Minako DID think that Haruka was a guy for a while because of her boyishness. But Michiru is fully aware of the fact the Haruka is FEMALE.

Hotaru is Haruka & Michiru's child.
Hello, they're both women, and the world just doesn't work that way!! You see, when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much... Anyway, back to my point, for one thing, two women cannot have a child except through artificial insemenation. That word was prolly spelled SOOOOO wrong. ;) For another thing, Hotaru already, you know, existed, and was reborn. Of course she was a baby, so Haruka and Michiru adopted her to raise her.

Michiru was pregnant in the anime OR when Hotaru was reborn, Michiru became pregnant with her, which is why Michiru and Haruka took her in.
No, Michiru was never pregnant, but she and Haruka did take in Hotaru to raise her after her rebirth. Michiru would have been cute as a pregnant person, though. ^_^

The rings Haruka & Michiru wear in the manga are wedding rings
They aren't wedding rings, they're promise rings, and all the outer senshi have them. They're for the promise they made to be faithful to their mission.

Haruka is a hermaphrodite (meaning she can change her gender at will or that she is half male and half female) OR Haruka is a man and changes into a woman to transform.
Obviously the person who said this has not seen much of Sailor Moon. :) Haruka is only a girl, simple as that, and the only people who actually change gender are the starlights in the anime. She does have a very masculine attitude and appearance, but that's her business. :) Yes, in the manga it does say that she is a senshi of both genders, but this is meant to be taken symbolically. At a San Diego Comic Con in August 1998, Naoko Takeuchi was asked about it and said that no, she is simply female. Always. In the French version, she is male, sort of like in the English version, Zoycite is female.

Haruka is male, and is a transvestite.
HARUKA IS FEMALE FEMALE FEMALE!!! And maybe she likes to wear boyish style clothing sometimes, but I like to wear my boyfriend's sweatshirts and I don't consider myself a transvestite.

Haruka acts like a boy and crossdresses because her parents wanted a boy so they treated her like one.
Her parents were never mentioned. And um, that theory is just WEIRD.

Haruka acts/dresses like a boy because she was sexually abused in an orphanage. That's also why she's a lesbian.
WHERE did you come up with this? Another weird theory... No orphanages or parents or sexual abuse were ever mentioned. Somebody is getting a bit too comfy with fanfiction, here...

Haruka and Michiru are sisters/cousins in the original.
They're just not. In the North American dub they were made cousins. Again, I must say that carrying on a lesbian relationship with anyone related to you is just plain weird, and it belongs on Jerry Springer... ;)
